About Us
Once upon a time, a girl in her late teens semi-flippantly said she would one day like to own a coffee shop. Then she went on to college, got her four year degree in English, and landed a fabulous part-time job at a library. After a few months, she began to feel a burning desire to do something more with her life. The idea of running a coffee shop seemed the perfect balance of ambition and fun. With the support of her husband, family, and friends, she decided to move forward with the plan.

The Altoona Pub was purchased, and months of renovation began (and turning a long-time bar into a pleasant smelling, visually appealing coffee house proved to be quite the task). Coffee equipment was bought, paint was painted, and the girl realized she better learn a thing or two about espresso.
(She had long ago trained her palate to identify a good drink, but didn't yet know how to MAKE one!) She happened upon Carl at The Coffee Barn, ordered some flavoring, decided on a name (thanks to her big brother, Brad), and soon after the doors opened. (Well, some of the more boring details have been omitted, but you get the picture.) Ever since that wonderful day in June of 2004, Being There Coffee House has been helping Altoona-ites and anyone else who enters its door become very, very satisfied coffee drinkers.
Just simply because people frequently ask, the idea for the name of the coffee house came from a Wilco album. Kara's brother, Brad, suggested a list of ideas, but when her eyes landed on being there she instantly knew that the name had been found. It seemed to perfectly encapsulate the warm, casual environment that she created, and it gave a nod to one of her favorite bands. And no, she never considered switching it to bean there.
Our coffee comes from The Coffee Barn. Not only is The Coffee Barn approximately 37 steps from our backdoor, but it also happens to be the best darn coffee that we've ever tasted. So it's always fresh, and it's always good.
